The latest Consumer Intelligence Car Insurance Price Index shows that quoted car insurance premiums have fallen by 10.5% in the past year. However, this overall trend masks a growing challenge for younger drivers, with under-25s seeing average premiums rise by 3% in the last three months.
For drivers aged 17 to 19, the picture is particularly difficult. Telematics providers – once highly competitive in this space – are showing less interest in offering low-cost options. This means the youngest motorists face fewer affordable insurance choices, with training and post-test support becoming increasingly important in managing risk and keeping costs down.
Across the UK, Wales recorded the largest annual fall at 19.6%, while Scotland (4.1%) and London (5%) saw the smallest decreases. Most drivers received quotes between £250 and £749, with the most common range being £250–£499 (26%).
Long-term data reveals the scale of change in the market: since 2013, quoted premiums have almost doubled, with over-50s facing the steepest rises at 122.2%. More recent trends show over-50s benefited most from this year’s reductions (down 13.9%), while under-25s saw only modest annual falls of 2.3%.
For trainers, these figures underline the importance of supporting younger drivers with risk-reducing behaviours. Insurance premiums continue to reflect the challenges this group faces, particularly as telematics products decline in availability.
