With Halloween celebrations just around the corner, LeaseCar has issued a stark warning for motorists — driving in fancy dress could cost you up to £5,000 and nine penalty points.
Rule 97 of the Highway Code makes it clear that clothing and footwear must not prevent proper control of a vehicle. That means driving while wearing a heavy costume, oversized shoes, or a large mask could be classed as careless driving.
If your outfit limits your ability to steer, use the pedals, or fasten your seatbelt safely, you could be fined or disqualified. Worse still, if a mask or face paint hides your identity from a speed camera, you could also be prosecuted for failing to provide driver information, which carries six penalty points and a £1,000 fine.
LeaseCar Director Tim Alcock said: “Halloween is about fun, but not when it comes at the expense of road safety. If your costume affects how you drive, you’re breaking the law. It’s best to travel in normal clothes and change once you arrive at your destination.”
Five Tips for a Safe Halloween Drive
- Take off masks or helmets that restrict your view.
- Avoid fancy footwear — keep a pair of trainers handy.
- Secure long or loose costume parts.
- Watch for children trick-or-treating in dark clothing.
- Keep props and accessories out of the driver’s area.
LeaseCar says the message is simple: stay comfortable, stay visible, and make sure your spooky celebrations don’t lead to real-life scares behind the wheel.
