DVSA targets ‘ghost’ MOTs in latest fraud crackdown

Driver trainers are being advised to raise awareness among pupils and fleet clients about a rise in fraudulent MOT certificates, known as ‘ghost’ MOTs, where no physical test is actually carried out.

This illegal practice involves garages issuing MOT certificates without properly inspecting vehicles, meaning serious mechanical or safety defects could be missed. DVSA data indicates that these fraudulent MOTs make up the majority of known MOT test fraud.

With all vehicles over three years old required to undergo annual MOT testing, ensuring these checks are genuine is vital for road safety, especially for learner drivers and fleet vehicles that may unknowingly be operating in unsafe conditions.

DVSA is actively responding to the issue through new enforcement measures, including a photo evidence requirement during MOT tests. Trial schemes have proven effective, and the strategy is now being expanded across the network.

Garages caught issuing fraudulent MOTs can lose their authorisation to test vehicles. In more serious cases, offenders may face prosecution, fines or even prison sentences.

Trainers are encouraged to speak to pupils and clients about the importance of using approved, reputable MOT centres and to report any suspicions of fraud directly to DVSA.

This should be part of theory education along with so much else. We need a proper theory syllabus formally delivered.

Not sure how a learner drivier is going to determine if MOT centre is reputable and approved cebtre.
I think DVSA should be monitoring and making check on MOT centres, because are qualified to do so, its their job and they have resources.
