Eight car decluttering hacks to avoid road trip risks

Breakdown specialists The AA has teamed up with The Declutter Hub to offer drivers practical advice for summer trips, highlighting how overloading vehicles can lead to fines, tyre blowouts, and invalid insurance.

A car that is too heavy could cost drivers £300 and three penalty points if it exceeds weight limits by 15% or more. The AA warns that excess baggage affects braking, steering, and fuel efficiency — and may leave motorists out of pocket if their insurance is voided.

To help, The Declutter Hub’s Ingrid Jansen and Lesley Spellman shared eight decluttering hacks for smoother getaways:

  • Clear everyday clutter before packing.
  • Swap hard suitcases for soft bags.
  • Place heavy items flat and forward, stack medium items securely, and keep light items on top.
  • Use compression bags or packing cubes to save space.
  • Label or colour-code bags to avoid rummaging.
  • Keep a car essentials kit with snacks, wipes, and chargers.
  • Bring a small bin or bag for rubbish.
  • Reset your car after the journey to avoid future stress.

Greg Carter, Technical Specialist at The AA, said: “Excess weight affects braking distance, tyre wear, and overall handling — especially on long journeys. Always check your car’s load capacity and pack smart.”
