Two more electric car models have been added to the government’s EV grant scheme, meaning 40 cars now qualify for financial support under the initiative.

The Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 have joined the list, both eligible for the £1,500 band-two grant. Just two cars — the Ford Puma Gen-E and E-Tourneo Courier — currently qualify for the higher £3,750 grant, awarded to the most environmentally efficient models.

To qualify, vehicles must:

  • Cost £37,000 or less
  • Have a minimum 100-mile electric range
  • Offer a three-year or 60,000-mile warranty and an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty
  • Meet environmental standards through a science-based target and carbon efficiency benchmark

Transport Minister Keir Mather confirmed that more than 20,000 UK drivers have already received EV grants.

“The UK’s EV market hit record sales in September, and with Britain leading countries in Europe for new electric vehicle registrations, we’re driving a major boost to the sector,” said Mather.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveal that half of all cars registered in September were electrified (50.8%), with battery electric vehicles up 29.1%. The 72,779 BEV registrations made it the strongest month yet for electric car sales, accounting for nearly one in four new cars sold (23.3%).

For driving instructors, this ongoing growth signals a shift in learner expectations, as more pupils begin lessons or tests in electric vehicles. Trainers should consider developing their EV knowledge to stay aligned with modern driver education trends.
