The UK Government has opened applications for operators to run taxi and bus-style self-driving vehicle services on public roads, marking a major step towards commercial autonomous passenger transport in Great Britain.

Automated passenger services pilot launched

The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed that companies will now be able to apply to operate self-driving passenger vehicles under a new pilot scheme, with services potentially available to the public later this year.

The move is expected to involve companies including autonomous vehicle technology firms such as Wayve and Waymo, alongside transport operators such as Uber.

According to the DfT, the pilot scheme is designed to gather real-world evidence on how autonomous vehicles interact with road users and operate safely in live traffic environments.

Safety remains central

The Government says the vehicles and operators will be subject to strict approval processes and safety requirements, including cyber security and operational assessments.

The announcement comes as the wider road safety debate increasingly focuses on advanced driver assistance systems, automation and how emerging vehicle technologies could affect future driver training and road use.

Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood said self-driving technology could improve independence for older and disabled passengers while also creating economic growth and skilled jobs across the UK.

The DfT also highlighted that human error currently contributes to 88% of road collisions, positioning automation as part of a wider road safety strategy.

Accessibility and public trust

The Government says local transport authorities, including Transport for London, will need to approve services locally to ensure they align with transport priorities and accessibility expectations.

Industry representatives welcomed the announcement, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders describing it as a “significant milestone” in the rollout of automated passenger services.

The Government is continuing to develop wider automated vehicle regulations following a recent Call for Evidence on self-driving legislation.
