Summer driving might feel more relaxed, but for your car, the heat brings stress – and sometimes serious failures. According to a new survey from Vertu, 97% of technicians say the most common issue they deal with in summer is a failing air con system.
With tyre blowouts, squeaky brakes and overheating engines also high on the list, it’s important for instructors to help pupils stay prepared – especially ahead of test days or holiday travel.
Top summer issues affecting drivers:
1. Air conditioning failures (97%)
Heat and heavy use expose problems like low refrigerant, clogged filters or worn parts. Look out for poor cooling, strange noises or weak airflow. A simple A/C service can save a breakdown later.
2. Tyre pressure concerns (46%)
Tyres can overinflate in the heat, causing uneven wear or dangerous blowouts. Get pupils to check pressures and tread depth before long trips.
3. Squeaky brakes (34%)
Brake noise often ramps up in summer, thanks to expansion from heat or dust build-up. Squeaks or grinding need early checks to avoid bigger problems.
4. Engine overheating (30%)
Low coolant, leaks, and poor maintenance can quickly lead to engine damage. Check for puddles, inspect coolant levels and book repairs if anything looks off.
5. Summer battery issues (20%)
Warm weather can be just as tough on batteries as the cold. Heat speeds up fluid evaporation, leading to early failure. Keep it clean, test it in advance, and avoid direct sun where possible.
Summer prep makes a difference
Vertu’s Calum Thomson said: “Encouragingly, we’re seeing more drivers take summer prep seriously. Over a third of our technicians report that customers are actively getting their vehicles checked ahead of summer travel.”
