More than 200 million DVSA test records have been analysed to reveal the most common reasons UK cars fail their MOT.
The new research by MoneySuperMarket identifies the top mechanical and safety faults that frequently lead to MOT failure, while also launching a Car MOT Fail Checker tool to help drivers look up issues specific to their car model.
Top Reasons for MOT Failure
The analysis found that the most common problems are:
- Parking brakes not holding securely.
- Tyre tread depth below the 1.6mm legal limit.
- Windscreen washers not providing enough fluid.
Since 2005, handbrake efficiency has been the leading cause of failure, with more than nine million recorded faults. Tyre tread issues come next, followed by exhaust emissions, worn wipers, and faulty lights.
Cars Most at Risk
Drivers of Peugeot 207, Peugeot 206, and Citroën DS3 models are statistically most likely to face an MOT fail. The Fiat Punto, Renault Megane, and Volkswagen Polo also appear in the top ten.
For many motorists, the issues are avoidable. Checking tyre tread and pressure regularly, topping up washer fluid, and ensuring the handbrake is properly adjusted can prevent an unexpected fail — and unnecessary costs.
Helping Drivers Prepare
Alicia Hempsted from MoneySuperMarket said: “We created the MOT Fail Checker so drivers can see where their car might struggle before test day. A few simple checks can save time, money, and stress.”
